TO BE ABLE TO LEARN TO DRIVE YOU MUST...
  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Hold a signed valid provisional driving licence.
  • Be able to read in good daylight (with glasses or contact lenses, if you normally wear them), a motor vehicle number plate at 20.5 metres (about 67 feet) or with the newer style number plate at 20 metres (66 feet).
  • Be medically fit to drive
  • You must be supervised by a person who is - at least 21 years of age, and holds a full EC/EEA licence for the category of vehicle being driven, and has held that licence for three years.
  • You must wear a seat belt, unless exempted, and make sure that all seat belts their anchorages and fittings in the vehicle are free from obvious defects.
  • Be aware of the legal requirements to notify medical conditions which could affect your safe driving. If a vehicle has been adapted for a disability, ensure that all the adaptations are suitable to control the vehicle safely.
  • Know the rules on the issue, presentation or display of - driving licences, insurance certificates, tax discs.

As your instructor I will be responsible for the following while driving my car...

  • The vehicle you drive will be legally roadworthy, display a valid tax disc, and has a current test certificate if over three years old.
  • The vehicle will be properly insured for its use.
  • I Will display L-plates to the front and rear of the vehicle.


Other legal requirements you should know about...

  • Ensure that any children under 14 years of age are suitably restrained by the appropriate restraint or adult seat belt.
  • New Mobile Phone Law
    From midnight 27th February 2007 drivers will receive three points on their license and an increased fine of £60 if caught using hand held mobile phones while driving.
